The course minimum requirement is to complete 45 qualifying
flying hours, of which 10 hours will be solo. When you have gained
your PPL(H), you are entitled to fly helicopters (but not for hire or
reward).
These hours include:
 | 5 hours instrument flying |
 | 5 hours navigation |
In addition, there are 6
multiple-choice examinations covering:
 | Air
Law |
 | Navigation |
 | Human
Factors |
 | Helicopter
Technical |
 | Meteorology |
 | Radio |
There is a final flying test with an examiner, and the medical
requirements are little more than those required for an insurance medical.

Both Bristol and Astra Helicopters offer career courses leading to the
award of CPL(H).
Applicants must pass a series of general flight tests and the
commercial written exams.
The modular course for the CPL(H) and instructor rating is as follows:
| 1. PPL(H) course |
45 hours |
| 2. Post PPL continuation flying |
155 hours total time including 50 hours PIC |
| 3. CPL(H) practical knowledge course (external) |
|
| 4. CPL(H) modular flying course |
30 Hours |
| 5. Theoretical knowledge examination |
|
| 6. Flying skill test |
|
After successful completion of these requirements, you will be awarded
a Commercial Pilots' Licence.

|
|
Should you wish to continue to become a flying instructor, the
following modules are then added:
| 7. Continuation flying as commercial pilot |
300 hours total time and 100 hours PIC |
| 8. Pre entry flight test |
|
| 9. Flying instructor course |
30 hours |
|
|
|
Under JAR FCL it is
possible to instruct with a PPL(H) and therefore 4 and 6 above may
be omitted. If this is
the case, then 7 above becomes 200 hours PIC.
